An Act to Abolish 72-Hour Waiting Period for Gun Purchases

Support
Status: First Chamber (House)

LD 1230 would restore the ability of law-abiding Mainers to complete firearm purchases without an arbitrary 72-hour state-imposed delay, affirming that once an individual has passed all required background checks, the right to acquire a firearm should not be suspended by government fiat.

This policy corrects an unwarranted expansion of bureaucratic control over private commerce that serves only to burden responsible gun owners and retailers without demonstrably enhancing public safety. The waiting period has already been challenged in court as a violation of constitutional rights, underscoring that government must respect fundamental freedoms rather than delay them. Rather than layering on more regulatory delays, Maine should focus on enforcing existing laws and upholding citizens’ rights to self-defense and commerce.
